Is this route worth a separate trip?
Yes—when you want one strong scene without losing half a day.
Many Tokyo anime guides become long collections of pins. This route has a narrower promise: reach the most recognizable Suzume view in Ochanomizu, understand where to stand, and enjoy the railway landscape without rushing across the city.
The bridge walk itself is compact. The extra time is for finding the right station exit, watching the different railway lines cross the river, taking photographs without blocking the sidewalk, and choosing whether to finish with soba.
If you already plan to be in Akihabara, Kanda, Jimbocho or Tokyo Station, this route fits naturally into the same day. If Suzume is the main reason for your visit, use Tokyo Station as an optional prologue and let Hijiri Bridge remain the visual finale.

Start at Ochanomizubashi Exit
Begin by the western bridge, then follow public sidewalks to Hijiri Bridge. The 60–90-minute allowance includes looking around and photo pauses; it is not the walking time between the bridges.

Use Hijiribashi Exit
Head straight to the bridge if the railway view is your main interest. Both choices finish at the same scene. Adding a meal can turn the outing into roughly 2–3 hours.
Check the exit name. JR East opened a new Hijiribashi entrance in December 2023, after the film’s release. Use current station signs and the JR map. Stay behind bridge railings; the railway tunnel is not a visitor route.

The beginning / Get your bearings
Start with the river,
then find the crossing trains
Use JR Ochanomizu Station’s Ochanomizubashi Exit (御茶ノ水橋口) for the full walk. Pause on Ochanomizu Bridge and look along the river: this first view helps you place the station and the arched Hijiri Bridge in the same landscape.
This is an orientation stop, rather than a separately confirmed film scene. Notice the river, the station and the direction of Hijiri Bridge, then follow the pedestrian directions. Use designated crossings and follow any temporary diversions.
Next: Hijiri Bridge’s eastern sidewalk, looking toward the railway crossing. Keep the river as your reference; avoid navigating from an old photograph of a ticket gate.
Recognize your exit
Main view only? Use this entrance.
Hijiribashi Exit (聖橋口) is the alternative for going directly to the featured viewpoint. The photo shows the rebuilt entrance, rather than the station as it appeared at the film’s release.
The two exit names are easy to mix up. Read the name on the sign; use the JR station map for the current layout and accessibility information.

Take your time on Hijiri Bridge
Look east from the bridge toward the tracks crossing the Kanda River. The layered railway lines, water and buildings are the visual payoff of this compact walk. Watch how the tracks cross at different levels before taking a photo; the shape of the place matters as much as catching a train.

A simple photo sequence
First, a wide view: include the river and buildings to show the setting. Then, a railway detail: keep the crossing tracks in frame and let a train enter naturally. Compare with the photograph at the top of this guide, without trying to reproduce every detail.
Keep pedestrian space clear and move along when it is busy. Do not step into the road or wait indefinitely for several trains to align.
Anime versus now
Expect the railway landscape, not a frozen film frame.
Ochanomizu Station and its entrances have changed since the film was released. Signs, barriers, construction details and the trains in view can differ. The lasting match is the layered composition: river below, railways crossing at several heights, and the city rising behind them.
This is a natural place to finish the pilgrimage. Return to the station, or continue for lunch if you would enjoy it.

Swap the river and railway for a seated soba lunch. Kanda Matsuya gives the outing a satisfying food stop without turning it into another long sightseeing route.

- Before going
- The Chiyoda Tourism listing gives an 11:00 opening and Sunday closure. Check the restaurant’s calendar for your date before making the detour.
- If it is busy
- If the queue would spoil your afternoon, return toward Ochanomizu for a café break. Keep lunch flexible; allow extra time for both the walk and the meal.

Optional prologue / A separate train leg
Begin where Suzume arrives in Tokyo
JNTO’s film journey places Suzume’s arrival at Tokyo Station after the Shinkansen ride from Shin-Kobe. That makes the station a meaningful prologue, especially if you are already arriving through Marunouchi.
Use the red-brick Marunouchi side for a spacious exterior view, then travel to Ochanomizu by train. Do not treat the building photograph as a frame-matched location claim; the value here is the story transition from long-distance arrival to the compact bridge scene.

Leave room for Ochanomizu itself
JNTO describes Ochanomizu as a neighborhood of musical-instrument stores, bookshops and inexpensive places to eat. That local texture is a better extension than adding several weak “anime spots.”
Browse only if the streets interest you. The pilgrimage is already complete at Hijiri Bridge, and the soba stop provides a calm ending if shopping is not part of your day.

Choose your kind of light
Our starting suggestion: a daylight visit outside the commuter peaks. It is easier to read the railway layers and leave space for photographs when you can move comfortably on the sidewalk.
Bright sun: check your phone preview for glare on the water. Overcast skies: concentrate on the river and rail geometry. Rain: keep the bridge stop short if umbrellas make the walkway cramped.
These are photography suggestions, not verified film-matching times. The bridge view is the destination; a particular train alignment or season is a bonus.

Which bridge is the Suzume viewpoint?
Hijiri Bridge provides the featured railway-and-river view. Nearby Ochanomizu Bridge is the orientation stop at the beginning of this route.
Can you enter the railway tunnel?
No visitor route into the tunnel is included. View the railway from the public bridge sidewalk and stay outside its barriers.
Is this an official guided tour?
No. This is an independently edited self-guided walk. JNTO supports the main location connection, not every route choice, restaurant or photography suggestion.
When is the bridge least stressful to photograph?
Daylight outside the busiest commuting periods is the easiest starting point. Conditions vary, so keep the sidewalk clear and shorten the stop when it is crowded or umbrellas reduce space.
Do I need to wait for a particular train?
No. JR and Tokyo Metro trains create different compositions throughout the day, but no specific alignment is required to enjoy the view. Treat a well-timed crossing as a bonus.
Can I combine it with another Shinkai route?
