Why this trip is worth taking

The city after the ending

Hakone lets you travel through the mountain geography that became Tokyo-3. Ube offers a different kind of Evangelion trip: the ordinary station, streets and industrial landscape that carry the emotional weight of the final scene in Shin Evangelion. It is also director Hideaki Anno’s hometown.

This guide turns those connections into a practical route. You can walk the station area, eat Ube ramen, then take a local bus to Tokiwa Park for the full-scale Longinus Spear, Coal Museum and lake.

Why fans come here

Walk the frame, not a film set

The station is officially identified by Ube City as one of the models connected to the film’s final sequence. It remains a working JR station, so the respectful approach is simple: buy the ticket you need, stay behind safety lines, avoid tripods at busy times and never hold doors or block stairs.

Start outside, pass through the concourse, then look back from the footbridge. The long sightlines, modest platform furniture and everyday commuter setting are exactly what make this stop feel different from a themed attraction.

These are the two unmistakably Evangelion-specific visuals in Ube. Because promotional photographs are copyrighted, the live official posts are embedded below rather than copied into the media library.

Stop 4 · Tokiwa Park

More than the spear

Do not arrive, photograph the monument and immediately leave. Tokiwa Park gives the second half of the route breathing room: lake views, Ube’s coal history and a long-running outdoor sculpture culture.

Try Ube ramen near the station

Ube ramen is known for a rich pork-bone broth. Ikkyu Shinkawa is a practical stop at 1-9-14 Chuocho, close enough to fit between the station walk and your bus to Tokiwa Park.

Current listed hours: Monday–Thursday 11:00 AM–1:00 AM; Friday–Saturday 11:00 AM–3:00 AM; Sunday 11:00 AM–11:00 PM. Hours can change.

Time-sensitive · 2026–2027

Ube Machijuu Evangelion 2026

The citywide campaign is scheduled for October 29, 2026 through March 14, 2027. Ube-Shinkawa Station is planned as an event spot, with food and stamp-rally elements announced by the city. Details may be added or changed as the opening approaches.

A Unit-01 statue is scheduled at Yamaguchi Ube Airport from September 18, 2026 through March 14, 2027. Treat it as an arrival bonus during the event period—not a permanent promise.

Getting there and staying over

Two useful Klook options

The public airport bus is the economical default; the September 2026 schedule lists a ¥310 fare between Yamaguchi Ube Airport and Ube-Shinkawa. A private transfer makes sense for a group, late arrival or heavy luggage. Staying by Ube-Shinkawa is useful if you want both the station at golden hour and the illuminated spear at night.

Private airport transfer

Best for luggage, families or a late arrival. Solo travelers should compare it with the current airport bus first.

Choose the right Evangelion trip

Ube or Hakone?

Choose Ube for Shin Evangelion

Come for the final-scene station, Anno’s hometown context, Eva Hand, Longinus Spear and a compact city-to-park route. It is quieter, more specific and works in half a day.

Choose Hakone for Tokyo-3

Go to Hakone for the mountain geography, Lake Ashi, Owakudani, EVA-YA and a full-day transport loop through the setting behind Tokyo-3.

Quick answers

Ube Evangelion FAQ

Is Ube-Shinkawa Station really in Shin Evangelion?

Ube City officially identifies the station as one of the models connected to the final scene. Visit it as a functioning public station, not as a controlled film set.

Can I do the route without a car?

Yes. Walk the station-area stops, then use a local bus or taxi to Tokiwa Park. Check live schedules because service frequency is lower than in major cities.

Is the Longinus Spear permanent?

The full-scale spear is a permanent installation at Tokiwa Park. The official park page currently lists illumination from sunset to 10:00 PM.

Is the 2026 event permanent?

No. Ube Machijuu Evangelion 2026 is scheduled from October 29, 2026 to March 14, 2027, while the airport Unit-01 statue is scheduled from September 18, 2026 to March 14, 2027.

How long should I allow?

Allow five to seven hours for the station, lunch, bus ride and Tokiwa Park. Add an overnight stay if you want both daylight photographs and the illuminated spear without rushing.
